Luxury woods used in our conservatories & Orangeries

Orangeries and conservatories can be made in a variety of materials from PVC to aluminium and oak to other types of wood. Which material you decide to go for depends on various factors including budget, personal choice, building regulations and how elegant you want your glass extension to look.

At Hampton conservatories we specialise in premium wooden conservatories and orangeries and only use the finest timber brought in from around the world.

Sapele Mahogany

Sapele mahogany comes from a species of tree known as Entandrophragma Cylindricum which is widely distributed in West and Central Africa. Sapele has the same strength class as oak but it is not as difficult to work with or maintain.

Sapele wood is well known as a decorative sliced veneer for high-class furniture, piano cases and panelling. It is also popular with high end furniture makers for internal drawer sides and rails.

A Hampton’s hardwood orangery or conservatory will always use Sapele Mahogany due to its strength and sustainable Any structural part of the conservatory or orangery including rafters, frames and posts use solid Sapele Mahogany, doors and sashes manufactured from laminated sapele mahogany for its stability

Accoya

Accoya wood is a brand of timber that has been put through a process that alters the actual cell structure of wood. The process is call acetylation and is the result of over 75 years of scientific research.

There are several benefits of using Accoya in a wooden conservatory or timber orangery.

Timber that has not gone through this modification process absorbs and releases water depending on the weather, causing the wood to expand and contract. This can result in the wood splitting or rotting over time. Accoya wood has been modified to reduce its cell walls, meaning it will absorb around 80% less water than traditional woods. This increases the timbers dimensional stability and lowers maintenance frequency.

In addition, due to the change that has happened in the cell structure of the wood, fungi do not recognise Accoya as wood and therefore don’t target it. Wood eating insects that attempt to eat the wood die of starvation because the modified cells make it indigestible, so Accoya is no longer a source of food for them.

Accoya is used in all our wood conservatories and orangeries as it is the best material available for the purpose and can be finished to a very high look and feel. Due to it’s rot resistance qualities it is used in the sash cills, orangery entablature mouldings, external cills and timber pilasters of our conservatories and orangeries

Tulipwood

Most commonly, Tulipwood is the pinkish yellowish wood yielded from the tulip tree, found on the Eastern side of North America. In the United States, it is commonly known as tulip poplar or yellow poplar, even though the tree is not related to the poplars.

Tulip wood is very stable timber and is used internally on plate rails, crown mouldings and trims within our conservatory.
